We introduce David Rodstein in our August - September SPOTLIGHT article.

Take some time to review his images and read his story regarding his path into photography.  He gives us some insight into how he approaches his art.  Unlike many of us, he has the edge in that he appears to have had opportunity to obtain extensive training in the arts.  I'm impressed.  He's a welcome member of our group and we hope to see more of him!

His story:  I look for the unexpected and to tell a story that fills the frame. I do not look to capture images. Scenes capture me.

My start was at age 10 with a Polaroid. I had a long career in lighting design and industrial design. Paid photography was to document spaces for light, and products I had designed.

My major was industrial design at Pratt Institute with wet darkroom photography electives, and I had an intensive boot camp in drawing, painting-color theory, sculpture and space analysis before being allowed any photography classes.

Drawing teaches you subconscious composition, painting, color choices in post process, and sculpture. A photo is a 2D image of a 3D object or space. Understanding light is the 4th dimension to my photographs as it changes the scene by time of day and cloud cover.

My focus now is on fine arts photography.

Cheers,
David Rodstein
